Brewing for College - Chris R. Brews a Nut Brown Ale for his Plant Materials Project

Last year I was an adjunct Professor at Raritan Valley Community College.  I taught a class called "Plants, Humans and the Environment" which was designed by Dr. Jay Kelly.  One of the major requirements for the class is to use plants to make something.  One of Dr. Kelly's students, Chris R., decided to do his project on brewing and chose "Your Home Brewery" as his place to learn how to brew.  Based on  his beer preferences, we settled on a nut brown ale.  Here is the recipe:

6 lbs. Pale Dry Malt Extract
0.5 lbs. caramel malt
0.25 lbs. chocolate malt
0.5 oz. Galena hops pellets - bittering, added at the beginning of the boil
0.5 oz. Kent Goldings hops pellets - aroma, added at 5 minutes left.
Wyeast London ale smack pack

The yeast is healthy and fermenting nicely at 12 hours.  The Krausen is rising and the aroma is nice.

Chris made a nice contribution to the co-op, and we are on our way to buying a March High Temperature Brewing Pump.  The pump will be the heart of the RIMS Brewing System we're building.
